6 de Maio
Located just outside Lisbon, Portugal, the 6 de Maio borough was the perfect contrast to the Capital.
Having lived in Africa for most of my life, I am accustomed to similar degradation of buildings, the rural and impoverished way of life that falls on the minorities that live in these conditions but for the average Portuguese citizen, these are places to avoid at all cost.
The crime rate and the notorious reputation of these neighbourhoods make these very undesirable places to live, yet most of the people there as warm and welcoming as can be.
I chose to photograph these buildings prior to their demolition to preserve the memory and establish a timeline for analysis of the progression and evolution of the borough for the next 10 years.
This is a work in progress.
